Woody Allen's strongest drama in years is an updated homage to A Streetcar Named Desire, with Cate Blanchett giving a powerful central performance as a Blanche DuBois-type to Sally Hawkins's Stella. Blanchett plays Jasmine, a penniless New York socialite forced to live with her estranged sister Ginger (Hawkins) in a low-rent area of San Francisco. Jasmine's vodka-and tranquiliser-fuelled reveries flash back to her life of married privilege with financial expert Hal (Alec Baldwin) before dealing with her current life of struggle. Bobby Cannavale and comedians Andrew Dice Clay and Louis CK play the men in Ginger's life, as Jasmine strives for one more chance at happiness with a preppy diplomat (Peter Sarsgaard). With laughs derived from depression, death and denial, this is Allen at his tartest, tightest and most observant. Sensational.
