Colin Farrell and Jessica Chastain play servant and mistress in the latest screen adaptation of Swedish playwright August Strindberg's talky tale of social and sexual shenanigans on a night when class divides come down and anything goes. It's adapted and directed by the Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann who, for reasons best known to herself and the film's financiers, relocates the action from Sweden to Ireland. Farrell and Chastain both give it some welly as the socially ambitious valet and repressed nobleman's daughter. So too, though more subtly, does Samantha Morton, as Farrell's fellow servant and much put-upon fiancée. But Ullmann's direction, though competent, doesn't open things out for cinema, leaving the feeling that this Miss Julie is still something better watched on stage than on screen.
